Specialty: Schizophrenia
Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with Schizophrenia? This
can be a devastating diagnosis to receive. Many people believe that
the best treatment that someone with schizophrenia can receive is
medication and help in "coping" with their symptoms. I believe that
there is much more available to those who suffer with schizophrenia
than simply "coping" with their life.
The symptoms of schizophrenia can seem strange and scary to those
experiencing them and their loved ones. It can seem as if the person
that was there before the onset of the symptoms has completely
changed or disappeared. This is very tragic. The symptoms of
schizophrenia, while tragic, don't have to be so scary. I believe that
they are external manifestations of inner pain, just as the symptoms
of any mental illness are. I work with clients to make sense of the
symptoms and learn to live without them.
One of the greatest sources of psychic pain to someone with
schizophrenia is the loss of personhood in the world. People with
schizophrenia often feel very powerless in the world and don't know
how to obtain power. I help clients move through the stages of
development necessary in order to gain a sense of who they are and
how they affect the world around them.
Many people with schizophrenia get trapped in the world of their
symptoms. This causes others to treat them as if they are weak and
fragile. This causes them to believe they are weak and fragile and act
out the role of someone with no power. I help clients find a way out
of this cycle so that they can function as empowered people in the
world.
